SUMMARY:Exhibition opening: 'Total Hero Public Woman' Public Woman Collective
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition runs: 28 February – 18 March 2025\nExhibition opening: 28 February 2025\, 5.30-7.30pm\nWeekend gallery hours: Saturdays 1st\, 8th\, 15th\, 10.00am-4.00pm\n\nTotal Hero Public Woman explores internal and external struggles women experience in 2025\, and how their bodies can be the site of global-scale\, instantaneous public scrutiny. Women’s bodies are governed\, abused\, dominated\, objectified\, adorned\, and modified\, cut up and stitched back together. This exhibition puts front and centre the question of how much of this is within our control\, as a measure of the power we can expect and reclaim.\n\nExhibiting artists are Louise Rae\, Isis Dorado\, Lauren Broome\, Yasmin Soto\, Bethan Power and Phoebe Campbell.\n\n(Pictured: Yasmine Soto ‘Glistening in visceral pain #2’)

SUMMARY:Exhibition opening: 'All about Electronics' Jpark
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition runs: 8 February – 26 February 2025\nOpening event: Saturday 8 February 2025\, 1.00pm-3.00pm \nA surreal and unique look at electronics through the visual arts including acrylic paint on canvas\, silver\, copper\, brass and porcelain sculptures. The artist has viewed the subject in many ways\, including interpretations of tracks on a printed circuit board and free form sculptures. The artist uses found items on many works and tries\, when possible\, to recycle materials he has on hand. SUMMARY:Exhibition opening: ‘Radial Ecologies’ Scott Price
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition runs: 7 February – 25 February 2025\nOpening event: Friday 7 February\, 5.30pm–7.30pm \nRadial Ecologies is a site response to Swan River. It is an alternative approach to landscape; an attempt to close the gap with nature. Paperbark and leaves are set upon the surface of the paper\, washed with watercolour\, still wet. Capillary action traces the material elements of the site as they touch the paper\, travelling the narrow spaces of their texture. They leave their mark\, like fingerprints\, as the pigment pools and dries in the friction ridges. The blackened fingers of burnt eucalypts trace their way across the surface of the paper\, washed by yellow ochre. \n(Pictured: Njookenbooroo (Herdsman Lake) – Red Wattlebird\, Australian White Ibis\, Purple Swamphen V)

SUMMARY:Letters to Lindy: A staged reading
DESCRIPTION:By Alana Valentine. Directed by Susan Lynch. \nFriday 30th August – 7:30pm\nSaturday 31st August – 7:30pm\nSunday 1st September – 3:00pm \nTickets available here | $12/$15 \n“A dingo’s got my baby”. \nThe ensuing events and court cases captivated a nation. A mother accused of murdering her child\, her claim of a dingo taking her baby denied and discredited. It divided the nation into those supporting the dingo theory and those who saw the mother as evil. \nFor the first time in Perth\, the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts presents a staged reading of the powerful script by Alana Valentine based on the vast collection of more than 20\,000 letters written to Lindy and the transcripts from the many coroner inquests and court cases.
It reveals the media circus\, the rumours\, the rancour\, the vitriol and kindness and support\, the prejudices and a flawed legal system. \nVictoria Park Centre for the Arts has gathered an ensemble of Perth’s talented and accomplished performers to present this riveting and thought-provoking work. \nPermission: Creative Representation Pty Ltd (o.b.o. SUMMARY:‘Mapping Memories’ Sia Smyth Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:‘Mapping Memories’ Sia Smyth \nExhibition runs: 15 June – 30 June 2024\nOpening event: Friday 14 June 5.30 – 7.30pm\nGallery open weekends: 10.00am – 4.00pm \nMappa definition (Latin): Napkin\, or painted cloth. By using reclaimed fabrics Sia Smyth co-opts the past life of the cloth to imbue her artworks with the patina of time. The intimacy of covering the body with these memory cloths\, softly comforts and encloses the user. \nThese pieces use some of the conventions of traditional patchwork and reconfigure them for contemporary tastes. Sia has experimented with modes of construction to discover this new medium as her expression of creative practice. \n(Pictured: ‘Dreaming of colourful weekends’ (detail) by Sia Smyth)

SUMMARY:Tha Film Project: 'Beats of the Antonov' film screening
DESCRIPTION:Tha Film Project aims to promote cultural diversity and inclusivity through the impactful medium of film. Their objective is to showcase films created by diverse communities\, with a particular focus on African cinema. \n\n\n\nTha Film Project screening: Beats of the Antonov (2015)\nSunday 26 May\, 7.00pm – 11.00pm\nVictoria Park Centre for the Arts \nThis event is free\, register here to attend. \nTha Film Project have chosen to screen Beats of the Antonov (2015) by director Hajooj Kuka for the May screening. \nThe separation of Sudan into two sovereign states has not prevented the longest civil war in the African continent from raging on to this day. The inhabitants of the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountain regions\, having fought for the independence of South Sudan\, continue to fight for their cultural\, ethnic\, social\, and economic rights. \nWith Beats of the Antonov\, director Hajooj Kuka focuses on the everyday survival of people who have lost kin\, homes\, and livelihoods in the ongoing conflict\, but instead of devastation and defeat\, we discover communities emboldened to celebrate their heritage\, and to improvise creative ways to continue harvesting crops and herding cattle. With inspiring lucidity\, Kuka threads together the voices — speaking and singing — of militants\, social workers\, intellectuals\, and other everyday folk\, to reverse conventional representations of victimhood and reveal an alternative narrative of tenacity and resilience.

SUMMARY:Cameron Howard 'Video Game Worlds' Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition runs: 23 February – 12 March 2024\nOpening Event: Friday 23 February 2024\, 5.30pm – 7.30pm \n‘Video Game Worlds’ is a series of representational paintings that appropriate the visual aspects of game-play from role-playing video games (RPG). \nThrough recreating the game-play\, the paintings exaggerate and emphasize the visual aesthetic and qualities inherent to video games. The project focuses on the interaction between character\, setting and the role of the player as a character. The camera’s point-of-view plays into the perception of the setting\, altering our framing of the image and any possible meanings. \nThis project relocates the concepts of the sublime in our natural world to the digital landscape of video games. \n(Pictured: ‘Act 1’ (detail) by Cameron Howard)
