SUMMARY:Artist talk: Victor Ronan ‘50 Years of Deadly’
DESCRIPTION:Victor Ronan is the local feature artist for ‘50 years of Deadly’\, our 2026 NAIDOC Week Exhibition. Come to see him speak about this collection of beautiful paintings on Saturday 11 July. \nVictor started painting at VPCA’s Create Connect art workshops in 2021 before concentrating on developing his skills through more individually focused studies\, where Victor connected with the stories from his family. Victor’s technical approach references the work of local Noongar artists\, trained in Western styles of drawing and painting from the Carrolup School in the early part of the 20th century. Victor’s story echoes this year’s NAIDOC theme of determination and resilience\, studying and honouring his culture; continuing to develop a personal artistic voice. \n(Pictured: Victor Ronan ‘Outback Desert’)

SUMMARY:Cultural Dinner: Lebanese
DESCRIPTION:Discover the ways that culture and cuisine are interwoven on a laid-back evening getting to know your neighbours with delicious homemade food.\n\nCultural Dinners are an interactive experience where a local host prepares a meal to share their unique story and heritage. After introductions\, guests join in preparing an element of the dinner before having a homely sit-down meal together. Join us to see how global migration has shaped the cultures and cuisines in your community…\n\nThe Cultural Sharing Dinners Project is an initiative of the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts\, in collaboration with Victoria Park Community Centre. This project is funded by the Department of Communities through its Empowering Communities Programme.\n\nPlease note:\nThis is a community event rather than a restaurant experience\, so emphasis is put on connection\, respect and learning together. The evening’s culture/cuisine is detailed in the event info but may be subject to change to accommodate any last-minute changes in hosts. Guests are welcome to BYO alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages to accompany the meal; table water is provided. Unfortunately\, we are not able to cater for all dietary requirements as we already ask so much from our hosts; however\, there are vegetarian options at each dinner.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: ‘An Unnatural History of Moths’ Christopher Crouch and Cherish Marrington
DESCRIPTION:Opening event: Friday 7 August\, 6.00pm-8.30pm\nExhibition runs: 7 August – 25 August 2026\n \n‘An Unnatural History of Moths’ is a collection of drawings and watercolours based on the concept of camouflaged moths. The moths are fictitious and exist in a fictitious landscape\, but the principles of camouflage remain. They are both apart from the landscape and pretending to be it. The world that is depicted is a figment of the artist’s imagination\, and the process by which they are made involves Christopher Crouch and Cherish Marrington working on the same work\, creating a space that is coherent but alienating. This show is a part of an ongoing body of work. \n‘We are faced with an environmental catastrophe where an established cannon of beauty means nothing as forests die\, species vanish and the natural world that we thought would give us solace forever burns and floods and changes into something new.’

SUMMARY:Learning to Love You More: A Youth Community Art Event
DESCRIPTION:Need a break from exams or simply just need an excuse to socialise more than you already do?\n\nVictoria Park Centre for the Arts is hosting a “Learning to Love You More” inspired youth storytelling event. Showcase your artistic abilities/inabilities or come along as emotional support for your friend(s)\, and have fun with other young people from ages 12-25.\n\nOur purpose is to promote more youth engagement by engaging local high school and University students in a community event made for youth by youth\, with various activities inspired by the 2002 “Learning to Love You More” project and website. Hosted by our interns; Jocelyn Dean and Ahlia Vuletich.\n\nWe hope to accommodate you at the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts and ensure you feel comfortable and help you to connect with like-minded individuals your age.\n\nFree to attend\, please RSVP by registering on this page: https://events.humanitix.com/learning-to-love-you-more\n\n—\n\nAbout the original Learning to Love You More project:\n\nHeavily influenced by the feminist punk movement in the early 1990’s ‘Riot Grrrl’\, Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher co-created the project Learning to Love You More. What once was an active community participatory event for 8 years closed its doors in 2009; Miranda and Harrell themselves mentioned how their goal was to create these assignments as intervention projects to force individuals to do things they normally wouldn’t do.\n\nWe are reviving and reimagining a handful of assignments from this project\, to allow the youth of the 21st century to participate in a local social and community art event.\nIf you would like to learn more about “Learning to Love You More” check out the website: http://learningtoloveyoumore.com/\nWe look forward to hopefully seeing you soon!

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: ‘Idyllic | Industrial’ Kym McDowell
DESCRIPTION:Opening event (Green Gallery): Sunday 15 November\, 10am-12pmExhibition runs: 11 November – 29 November 2026Weekend gallery hours: Sundays 10am–2pm Meet the Artist\n\n‘Idyllic | Industrial’ explores the Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal power station in the UK and its place in the landscape in the process of decommissioning and dismantling.\n\nWith its position alongside the intersection of the River Soar and the River Trent\, the power station is both contrasted and complemented by historic canals\, recoursed waterways\, bridges and locks. Once essential for transport at the height of the Industrial Revolution\, these objects are now seen as beautiful remnants of a romanticised past.\n\nThis juxtaposition raises questions about how time transforms our perception of these structures. Could the cooling towers\, too\, eventually become romantic relics of a bygone era also worthy of preservation?\n\nPresented as part of the Head On Photo Festival.\n\n(Pictured: Idyllic Industrial 7\, Kym McDowell)

DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Park Centre for the Arts is launching our inaugural Summer Residency Program! \nWe are opening our gallery spaces for artists\, performers\, and writers looking for a collaborative residency space. There are two spaces available from January 31 to February 16: \n1. The Front Room\, a private\, lockable space for an artist or artist group. \n2. The Main Gallery\, an open plan studio space for hotdesk residencies. \nSee the venue map at the bottom of this page. \nEach creative resident will be given a desk\, in-kind hire and administrative support\, facility and internet access\, and two weeks of collaborative\, open-plan studio space at the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts. This is a space to work together\, collaborate\, support\, and develop works in progress across multiple artforms. Whether you are a poet\, painter\, or dancer\, whether you work digitally or communally\, the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts is open to you. We hope to provide additional support\, cheap venue hire\, administration\, promotion and constructive feedback and encouragement for interested creative beings.   \nThe Summer Residency program can be a promise to yourself to make time and space for your creative talents\, your artistic hopes and dreams\, and a chance to connect with the local creative community in Boorloo.
