Cultural Dinner (September)
7 September, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
$10Tickets available here
September’s Cultural Dinner
A fun evening of meeting new friends, learning another cuisine and sharing a diverse culture.
VPCA and Victoria Park Community Centre’s first cultural dinner will be hosted by Alia Abdi, whose family originates from Somalia, East Africa. Alia grew up here in Australia; however, that didn’t stop her family continuing their Somali traditions and cuisine. Food is an important component in bringing community together in the Somali culture. The Somali cuisine is a delicious fusion of East African, Indian, Persian, Arab, British, Italian, French and ancient Somali cuisines. This fun filled demonstration will be hands-on and will include making the Sambuusa filling as well as folding them into triangles.
Come and join Alia as she demonstrates how to make Somali Sambuusa. The evening will include a hands-on cooking activity, a meal, cultural exchange and a take-home recipe card.
Cost $10.
Upcoming Bi-monthly Cultural Dinners
Experience the interwoven aspects of food and culture at our bi-monthly dinners where a local resident designs and hosts an informal evening energised by their individual background and experiences.
Want to learn how to prepare samosas from Somalia? Listen to poetry from Greece? Find out about ancestral offerings in Vietnam? Play instruments associated with the Hindu goddess of music?
Preparing, serving, and sharing certain foods and drinks may appear simple but they often carry important social and cultural significance. These events invite us all to join in, gather around a table, share a meal, and learn from each other’s heritage, traditions, and contemporary interpretations.
All you need to bring is enthusiam, generosity, and respect for difference in our communities!
If you have any access requirements, need assistance with transport or have any dietary requirements please be in touch with us on: kyc_admin@vicparkarts.org.au and we will do our best to accommodate.
If you would like to host a session, please get in touch with Ben on (ph) 9361 1999 or (email) community@vicparkcc.org.au. There is a fee for hosts, and a budget for ingredients and support will be provided to imagine and plan your date. Absolutely no experience necessary!
